The Village of Sparta
Sparta exudes the special charm of a village that retains much of its historic architecture, and the relaxing ambience of a place removed from the hustle and bustle of bigger centres.
In 1813, Jonathan Doan, a Pennsylvania Quaker sought refuge from the persecution that stemmed from the refusal of the Quakers to take sides during the American Revolutionary War. He discovered the Sparta area. Today’s visitors to Sparta also find it to be a happy discovery with shops, art galleries, museum, tearoom, winery, and lavender shop within the village or nearby.
Many of the homes and businesses in Sparta reside in original buildings representing period architecture dating back to 1825. As indicated on the blue plaque in front of Beyond the Garden Gate, it is housed in “The Temperance House.” This 1840’s hotel, later called Elgin House, then Ontario House seemed to be one of the most popular in town, known for its holiday celebrations. The bar was closed in 1901 by Temperance supporters – the new Temperance House became not only a home for travellers, but also a social centre.
In the same welcoming tradition of years gone by, owner Darlene Sinclair invites you beyond the garden gate, to rooms filled with carefully selected treasures, and staffed with friendly and caring people.
